Cover of Cosmopolitismo chinês (Chinese Cosmopolitanism), by Shuchen Xiang

Philosophy

Chinese CosmopolitanismThe History and Philosophy of an Idea

Portuguese edition Cosmopolitismo chinês: a história e filosofia de uma ideia

Author: Shuchen Xiang

Shuchen Xiang challenges the claim that colonialism, racism and violence against the other are universal features of human nature: they are, she argues, culturally contingent. Drawing on Chinese processual holism and its non-dualist metaphysics, she shows why applying the Western discourse of race to the Chinese tradition is a category mistake, and what that tradition offers to contemporary questions of pluralism and decolonisation in a multipolar world.

About the author
Shuchen Xiang holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Cambridge, master's degrees from Warwick, Pennsylvania State and Hawaii, and a doctorate summa cum laude from King's College London and the Humboldt University of Berlin. She holds the Mount Hua Professorship of Philosophy at Xidian University, China. She is the author of Chinese Cosmopolitanism: The History and Philosophy of an Idea, published in Portuguese as Cosmopolitismo chinês in the China em Foco series.

Cover of Tudo sob o céu (All Under Heaven), by Zhao Tingyang

Philosophy

All Under HeavenThe Tianxia System for a Possible World Order

Portuguese edition Tudo sob o céu – passado e futuro da ordem mundial

Author: Zhao Tingyang

Zhao Tingyang takes the classical concept of tianxia, “all under heaven”, and turns it into a philosophy of world order. Against an international system that starts from the state, and therefore from the notions of foreigner and enemy, he proposes starting from the world: an order without exteriority, governed by a relational rationality that puts reducing mutual hostility before maximising exclusive interests. It is one of the few non-Western theories of world order available to the global debate.

About the author
Political philosopher, research fellow at the Institute of Philosophy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and professor at its Graduate School. He is among the most widely discussed Chinese thinkers in international debate.

Cover of A questão da técnica na China (The Question Concerning Technology in China), by Yuk Hui

Philosophy

The Question Concerning Technology in ChinaAn Essay in Cosmotechnics

Portuguese edition A questão da técnica na China – Um ensaio sobre cosmotécnica

Author: Yuk Hui

Yuk Hui rejects the idea of a single, universal technics and proposes the concept of cosmotechnics: the unification of moral and cosmic order through technical activity. He traces the historical transformation of the Chinese categories of qi (tool) and dao (way), and China's relationship with technological modernisation since the Opium Wars, to formulate a Chinese philosophy of technology and, with it, the possibility of multiple technicities in the face of global technological hegemony and the challenges of the Anthropocene.

About the author
Philosopher, Professor of Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Author of On the Existence of Digital Objects, Recursivity and Contingency and Art and Cosmotechnics, he is a leading contemporary voice in the philosophy of technology.

Sociology

Post-Western SociologyFrom China to Europe

Portuguese edition Sociologia pós-ocidental: da China à Europa

Edited by Laurence Roulleau-Berger and Li Peilin

The book proposes a post-Western sociology: the co-production of knowledge between Western and non-Western sociological traditions, against epistemic injustice and Eurocentrism. Its focus is the relationship between Chinese and European sociology, and the theoretical and methodological shifts required for common concepts to emerge from that encounter.

About the editors
Laurence Roulleau-Berger is Research Director at the CNRS, France (Triangle laboratory, ENS de Lyon). Li Peilin is a sociologist and former Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
